Picked up this old grinding stone from a garage sale yesterday and didn't even realize it had part of it cut out. I tried a bunch of different google searches with no luck. I just want to know who made this for one but I found it quite funny that it says "ass" too. But I can't find anything that starts with "atho".... Anyone have any guesses? The garage sale was a from an old timer who passed away and the kids had to sell everything to clean house. They said it was 42 years of tools and tinkering. Price was decent. I paid $8 for the grinding stone/wire wheel and another $5 for the motor that turns it. The motor was actually wired up and we tested it and it was so quiet I didn't think it was working until I saw the pulley spinning. I just have to get it mounted on a new piece of wood because they had it separated.

The lower part once said Athol, Mass. Maybe the upper said Ahtol tool co.?

Looks like ahtol tool co.

I got a similar one that was made by sears i believe.

Cool heritage

I wonder why they would grind away that section. Belt changes?

Probably for belt clearance. Someone probably mounted the motor in a position that put the belt at a funny angle.

Not sure why he did it. His kids (all grown up and older than me) said he liked to tinker with mowers and stuff. LOTS of tools and LOTS of homemade tools too. I bought a homemade caliper press the guy made for $2. Only thing I could think of is he had a big pully on the opposite end and he had to cut out a large section so the belt would clear maybe.

Side note: Athol sounds like asshole with a lisp.
