i have a 1995 saturn, got like 210k on it. when its cold, and i turn left it makes a wierd sound and vibration. only when i turn left. and only when the metal is cold, its getting worse, really fast.

im assuming i might as well just replace the whole cv axle end to end. shucks has them for like 50$ with a core.

has any one replaced these before? ive done some axle work (axle seal/bearing) but never one of these. in my head it seems pretty simple to replace.

anything i need to know? les scwab wants to charge me 100 for the part and another 100 for labor. cant be that hard if they only charge 100 for labor.

Based off of your description, I would also make sure the wheel bearing is not the issue. In my experience a bearing will hum and vibrate, and a CV axle will make a clicking sound.

As far as a CV axle replacement, they are pretty easy. Definitely not worth paying someone $100. I've done a few Escapes and 95-01 Explorers, but not any Saturns. I assume they would be pretty similar.

I agree, sounds more like a wheel bearing.

Yes, it still needs pressed either way. Believe me, I know how piss poor that design is; Ford/Mazda did it on the Escape. Save yourself the hassle of doing it again and buy a good bearing to begin with.

I got the Ford dealer to do mine for 60, then they charged my brother 20. We didn't even buy the bearings there either.

Do you have a freezer, snapring pliers, hammer, and a 6" 2x4? Little bit of grease goes a long way too.

Easy easy job. Even at work, when I have a press, I do them on a bench with a hammer. Used to, actually, now I have a press set that allows me to do them on the car.

I've heard of that method. Might try it next time.... which is in the next couple weeks.

LOL..... did you really do that Bobby? I can only imagine the YEARS of listening to "that time you put car parts in the dishwasher".

well....we popped some valves in one of my buds mustangs playing on telegraph....my ol lady was up at moms place...just moved into the new house we had built at the time....

i had to get another new dishwasher before she got home, but the sink still smelled funny for a few weeks.

fawker worked great though for sat at 1am...lapped all the valves in and was blowing the tires off by noon after a nap. he made it back to st louis on time too.

yeah i am stupid like that sometimes. building engines in the living room is tolerable, but using her kitchen tools is not.....fine line there on interpertation if she is not available to clarify:icon_rofl:
