Everytime i start my ranger The antilock light allways comes on what is this really doing keeping it from locking the rear end together? because the truck dont do good in grass being a 2wd shortbed its too light...what could i do to make it lock together more often or the light go off...? :icon_confused:

you mean the abs light? this would indicate a problem with the abs system. the brakes would still work, but one or more of the wheels could lock up during a panic stop

As stated above that's for your brakes. You can always get a locker for the rear. Lunchbox lockers are fairly cheap and easy to install.

Of course they won't lock up, that's the point of ANTI-lock brakes!! In a panic stop, ABS keeps the rear wheels from locking up. Being a 91, you have rear only ABS. Usually when the light comes on there is a problem with the speed sensor, since rear only is a 1 channel system, meaning the rears are linked together, you only have one sensor. It's very cheap and easy as pie to replace!!

That light being on still indicates an issue with the anti lock brake system even though you aren't locking up. Get it to flash the abs code at you then figure out what is wrong.

Simple first step would be to check the sensor for grease or grime build up. I had a Chevy once that would kick on the ABS light. I used a spray cleaner (for electronics) to clean the sensors and problem never returned.

You have just displayed a wonderful and complete unfamiliarity with your vehicle on even a basic level.

I suggest you browse Amazon.com or eBay for a copy of the owner's manual that is appropriate to your vehicle and read it cover to cover several times before continuing this line of inquiry since the correct answer has already been provided to you and you have rejected it out of hand.

BTW, the ABS system can be completely inoperative and have NO EFFECT on the base brake system. My personal recommendation would be to remove the light, unplug the module, and get some better tires if you can't move in grass without peeling out.

Also, the picture of the ABS malfunction indicator that you posted doesn't match what is in your dash because it is of a later design. Your ABS MIL is probably just a little orange light somewhere that says "Anti-Lock".

Couldn't have said it better myself.

Seems like 99 times out of 100 it's the sensor on the rear axle that kicks the light on. I'll either unplug the light or ignore it because I don't feel like messing with the stupid sensor. Sometimes they can be cleaned of grime and work (they're magnetic and they read a tone ring in the rear axle - they'll collect grime and metal shards and it interferes with reading the tone ring). But really, they don't much change anything either way - your brakes still work (they have to).

Want more traction? Better tires. Or if you really, really have to throw money at it, get a l/s rear end or a locker. But IMHO, better tires are a BIG improvement. After I put some of the knobbiest AT tires I could find on my Ranger, I rarely had problems getting moving.
