Another timing question! No power.

I know "search." Well I did and I read hundreds of posts, but am not finding a direct answer to my problem.

I changed a timing belt on a 1990 Ranger 2.3L 5spd distributorless ignition for a friend. He said it ran out of gas and put some in and wouldn't restart, so I took a look at it and it had a broken timing belt. I guess it had ran out of gas cause shortly after I changed the timing belt it ran out while idling. Changed the belt according to the haynes manual, minus some unnecessary steps, started fine, but runs like crap. Same old problem as everyone else. Idles ok, revs ok, not real high, but no power, barely goes anywhere, and no highway speed.

I checked the timing marks, the crank is on the TDC mark on the timing cover, and the triangle on the cam sprocket is lined up with the mark on the inner timing cover. Just runs like it is off a tooth or something.

The question is, I see alot of posts saying the aux. sprocket has a mark on it also, does mine have one? I did not see anything, and the haynes manual had no documentation idicating this to be true in this model. I noticed most posts on this mark seem to be in later models, but I was thinking since it is the later distributerless ignition it may have it I just missed it. Also I only noticed the one mark on the cam sprocket. Most posts with the aux. mark also said the pulleys had two marks on them, a diamond and an arrow.

I did not remove the crank position sensor, so I did not have to make sure it was back in right, although I did not remove the battery cables, would removing it for a little while reset anything and cause the computer to readjust the timing? I do not have a gauge to check the fuel pressure at the rail, but when I hit the schrader valve I get a good stream of fuel.

I am running out of options and need to get him back on the road. Any help would be appreciated.

Other parts changed: All 8 plugs, all wires, and fuel filter.

No, on a 90 2.3 you don't have to worry about the auxillary sprocket. Just the crankshaft and cam. You need to have the crankshaft keyway at 12 O'clock and line up the cam mark after that.

I know mine needs all three pulleys lined up.....sucks!

Ok, thank you. I lined up the crank pulley with the TDC mark on the timing cover. And lined the triangle on the cam up with the marking on the inner timing cover.

If the timing marks are dead on, and it has no power, anything else anyone can think would cause this truck to have low power. Ran fine before ran out of gas and timing belt broke. Changed fuel filter, plugs and wires.

chcnging the belt on my sisters 97 found that there is a timing mark on the bakside of the cam pulley. when it was aligned with tat mark instead of the one on the front, it did the job. my friend also had a similar problem with the 2.3 in his boat. but when aligned to the mark on the backside of the pulley ran like it shoud instead of not having power. try that out. it is a pain to see but might just be what you are after!

Cool, thanks for the info, I will check that out today. Im kind of at a loss with this one and it is starting to get to me, cause this is his and his wife's only car. If that mark isn't on the back I guess I will try bumping the belt a tooth either way and see what happens. If only it wasn't such a production.
