Another Starter problem

So I just swapped my 2.9 engine out with another 2.9 but the new 2.9 was an automatic. I got it running today but every time i start it the Starter grinds and clanks for a few seconds. It got too dark to see anything but what should i check for tomorrow? is there any difference between automatic and manual starters?

From what i understand - yes. I bought a starter for my 88 2.9 and was asked if it was auto or standard > 2 different part numbers.
