first the history of the truck. its a 89 xlt with the 2.9l automatic. i bought it like a month or so ago for 500 bucks from a guy down the street. it runs and the body is in decent shape so i think it was a good deal. but anyway when i got it, it was running really rich and when it got above about 3000 rpm it blows out a decent amount of black smoke. so i did all the normal stuff like change the plugs, wires, dizzy, and cap. for the fun of it i dropped the tank and checked for holes and it was good, and i pulled the fuel filter and it was also good so both of those are back on. i also pulled off the upper intake mainfold and it was filled with crap so i cleaned the mess out of it while i had it apart and also ran a bottle of injector cleaner through the gas tank. i saw in other threads that about the orange wire and its hooked up. i also plan to pull the o2 senser and fuel injectors so and check those. also as a side note the coolant temp gauge in the dash stays pegged on the cold side and there is about 4 to 5 volts going to both sides of the coolant senser itself.

but i want better gas milage i need to save the little money i got so any help would be greatly appreciated.

on the right track..but have the code been retrieved?

might be a bad FPR (fuel pressure regulator)....a quick check is to remove the little vacuum line from the rear of the FPR ...and IF fuel dribbles out of the line....the FPR is done. Not say that if nothing dribbles out, that the FPR could still be bad...just not leaking.

Is there a thermostat in it?

i didnt get any codes and the fpr is going to have to wait i have to finish putting the tank back on first but i dont know if there is a thermostat is there cause i didnt what to open the coolant system yet. but i'll do that some thanks so far though

i'm not all that familiar with obd 1 fords so i could have very easily not checked for codes correctly so any help like how to check codes for dummys would be great just to make sure i did it right

ok i looked at that and i'll check codes tonite but in the other thread that i was reading you said something about the ground wires being important so i was wondering can you post a list of all grounding wire locations and where they come from and possiblely what they do if you could do that from me that would be great.
