i need a spindle for a 95 ranger 4x4 my question is there a difference between a d28 spindle and one of a d35 i cant find one off of a d28 and look similiar

It's worse than you think. Not only are the D28 and D35 knuckles not the same, the 95 to 97 knuckles with the bolt on calipers are not the same as the early build ones.

thats awesome really all i need is the dust cover off of the back of where the axle shaft goes through theres a seal on the back

Dust cover? You're kidding right?

I've only ever seen ONE that was complete around here. That is one out of all of the vehicles I own and all of those that I've tore into the front axle on. When I discovered that one, I was like WTF.... is THAT what it's supposed to look like?? lol.

But yea, don't have them on any of mine. I just bolt the spindle right to the knuckle. And while I have it off, I pull what's left of the typically rotted dust shield on the knuckle off. Last time I decided it "wasn't that bad" and left that one on, it broke going down the road and gouged up the back side of my new alloy rim. F that.

The Dana 28 is long dead--it didn't make it out of the 80s. Neither did a lot of really bad bands. The 28/35 hybrid arrived, stupidly, after the 28 was dead for years and all Rangers were being built with 35s. The hybrid shares the outer bits with the 35 and the spindles are the same.

Edit: I need to clarify--I made that chart years ago. What I have listed as a D28 starting in '93 is really a D28 cwnter with D35 outer parts. It doesn't have the tiny little D28 u-joints that were the problem with the original D28. For some stupid reason after building 4x4 Rangers for 4 friggin years with only D35s, Ford decided to start making a stupid hybrid axle which uses an original D28 center section in a new beam with new inner shafts that are necked down and the old outer. Ford has always been the worst with this crap. Just like the 8.8 and 7.5 axles--same friggin axle except the ring gear. Is it really cheaper to build two different axles with so little difference? They aren't the same idiots now that they used to be but it was normal for Ford to have 3 different engines of nearly the same displacement with different bell housings requiring three different castings for the tranny and spewing out decades of confusion as people tried to determine which engine or tranny they had in order to buy parts. I'm amazed that Ford and AMC didn't merger and go down the tubes holding hands. Ford's international businesses were much stronger and more intelligent and kept Ford afloat. The modular V8s were brilliant and maybe the first thing Ford did right in the US in 50 years.

Maybe what I need isn't a dust shield then it looks like a hub seal that goes on the back of the spindle

There are two seals that are on the back side of the spindle - one is mounted on the axle shaft itself and one is in the end of the spindle against the little bearing in there. I can get you some Timkin part numbers a little later, I just bought all of the seals I need for a D-35 since I'm rebuilding one.

That would be great the one I need goes between the spindle and where the axle shaft comes through the spindle

Ok, the little seal that goes in the back of the spindle against the little bearing in there is Timken PN:722108

And the seal that goes on the stub shaft itself is Timken PN: 710453
