I can hear this sound when cold or hot, not under strain or load, but when about 2000 rpms. Its got a range that the sound cuts in and then stops. Doesnt happen all the time and its very light sounding. What can this be and should i be worried
Could be a number of things, actually. Light tapping or knocking usually comes from the engine or some other drive-train item like transmission, u-joints, or even road noise from tires (but it would be more like a constant speed than rpm).
Could also be an electric fan or something else on the serpentine belt (if applicable) like power steering, alternator, or a loose shroud.
Does it happen all the time at that rpm or is it only in certain gears/conditions of driving?
I'd have to say that if your truck is otherwise running fine and you don't have any other issues that it is normal...
It could also indicate something is either not working 100% or on the way out...depends on how long it's been going on and whether it's just a case of over-sensitive hearing (that I do not possess)...I usually turn the radio up loud so I can't hear anything like that...but that's only because I rely on the feel and movement of the truck to tell me something is wrong (I also do regular maintenance and check things pretty much weekly)...
do you have an oil pressure gauge or light? if light... install a gauge... if you have a gauge, check the pressure when it does it. if it remains normal, you may have to wait and see, 'till it give a better sign as to what is going on. intermittent problems suck!
