Failing is easy. Everyone can do it.
This is starting to get old. LOL

Ok, for anyone that's helped me in the past? Many Thanks! The FPR installed a couple of months ago solved the engine 'surge' problem (and boosted my MPG back up to 19-20ish)

Here's what the ol' girl did this afternoon:

Stopped off at the local spot for drive through...and the engine seemed to 'miss' (best way I can describe it) when under slight accel heading out. Didn't think to much of it, it's old and can 'burp' now and then if it wants to LOL.

Did a hour stop over at the folks place, and going up a small hill--It actually felt like the transmission was slipping. Tach was getting slightly jumpy from 2300rpm to about 3000 rpm. It wasn't the tach going bad itself (been there before) The engine was physically slowing down and speeding up on it's own. (truck was loosing speed as well, couldn't keep speed up even when it was speeding up---zero power)

I verified this by parking the truck in my spot, put 'er in "N" and increased the RPM to 2500. The tach started bumping down to 2200...up to almost 2800...Like it was hic-cuping. Slapped it into 'd' and 'r' and goosed it a bit. Normal power transfer and nothing oddball...However under light load, such as going up a small incline in 2nd/3rd gear? (Yeah...it likes to hunt now and then LOL..this was in 2nd however when it acted up) The engine felt like it was both loosing power-but--with a slight increase in RPM. Might be due to the tach itself not keeping "true time" with what the engine is actually doing. (aka, a rapid increase/decrease in RPM seems to make the tach built into the dash cluster a bit doggy)

I'm fairly sure at this point it's not a transmission issue (otherwise it wouldn't bugger up out of gear). However I did let it cool off slightly before swapping spots with the wife. Here's what it did:

Kicked it over, heard the fuel pump kick on normally....turned to 'start' and it did start---but couldn't maintain any idle now. idle dropped to below 500 and it stalled out.

Went for a 2nd start----Starter engaged....got about 1/2 a turn out...and then the starter slowed down to a crawl. Disengaged starter---but not before the engine kicked BACKWARDS like the timing went to hell. (timing being off can cause severe starter cranking issues...disty is secure and tight)

Said what the heck....started it, and this time it started normally (wouldn't idle for crap) several times in a row...and turned it around in my parking spot)

Keep in mind this has been running flawless sense the new FPR was installed a short while ago. All this happened this afternoon.

Now the complex manager where I live stated most likely it could be a fuel issue---So I did pick up a new fuel filter and air filter. (the fuel filter is 2 years old--almost....) I also understand the TFI module when it starts to fail? Can make for some really oddball problems---(my method of thinking is that the tach is acting sluggish when the engine acts up....might be a timing related issue (see: Starter engages and barely gets 2 cranks over before the engine kicks backwards slightly....over advanced???) And the TFI, while it takes its cue from the ECM....controls the final timing of the engine.

Worthy to note: no codes set. She's about due for a full tuneup, however the onset of these issues would point towards a general fault.

Tomorrows plan of attack:

Install new fuel filter.

Get reading from a fuel pressure gauge to see how the FPR and fuel pump are doing.

Install replacement TFI. (the current one is about 20 months old---)

Crossing fingers and hopeful for the best.

I'm more leaning towards an engine timing issue causing all these headaches. But won't rule out a fuel delivery issue.

Please let me know any other ideas, this is my daily driver.

Yeah those would be good places to start. Any codes at all???

I actually posted in the "Help!" section. I'm still going in circles trying to get the old TFI covered under the lifetime warr.

It did spit out (finally) a code 14 which is PIP signal was screwy. I'm really hopeful that it's the TFI module that caused it. But I'm on the fence...The coil pickup is still factory to my understanding.
