I hate to bother everyone with yet another cylinder head question...but I'm a little confused. I read the chart someone posted about flow rates. They listed an early model D port dual plug head and a late model D port dual plug head. According to the chart (and my understanding of it) The late model D port dual plug head was the best stock flowing head. This is where the confusion sets in. What is considered a Late model D port dual plug head? One post said that the late model head started in 1997 and went to 2001. And that the 1996 and older head was actually the early model D port dual plug head. Another post said that the 1995 through 2001 heads were all the same.

The reason that I'm asking is because I have a 1996 2.3 head and a 1999 2.5 head. When I bought my Ranger, the 2.3 engine that was in it was having some problems. I had a local machine shop rebuild the 2.3 head, only to find out that the block had some major problems. I found a 2.5 with only 78K miles that was involved in a roll-over. I did the 2.5 switch and have been running great since. If they are the same, I'll take the 2.3 and replace the 2.5 head. I had a lot of work done to the 2.3 head, plained, valve job, valve quides, etc. If the 2.3 is actually the early model D port head, I'll sell it. Any ideas?:icon_confused:

Use the 2.5 head, the flow numbers are the same (darn close) throughout the years, even the old carb motors. But the 2.5 head has a different lifter location and different rocker arm ratio, which uses the same cam and gets .050" more valve lift. That is the only reason they flow better is the higher valve lift.

Hey Mikel89us, Thanks for the info! I sorta guessed that the 2.5 was a better head. That, and I really didn't want to pull the head and swap it out!

Youre welcome! Just make sure you use the 2.5 intake on that head, we tried the 2.3 intake on my dads 2.5 transplant, and the water jackets dont line up at the intake. You will have an open hole!
