another 2.3 wont start

im telling you, it's probably the ICm or a bad ground...

Yes it's definitely an electrical problem........and yes it could be as simple as a ground wire somewhere. Sounds like one of those intermittent problems that's finally gone sour. Going to take a little continuity/voltage testing it sounds like unfortunately. Good luck!

GROUNDS ARE VERY IMPORTANT.my first engine swap i missed the battery ground the car did all kinds of crazy stuff except run.it is getting gas right

ya its getting gas just no spark, ive checked all the grounds and there all good. it seems funny, i backed it in the driveway the other night and it worked fine when i shut it off. the next day it would not start.

im not sure on your vehicle, but on my 94 its just behind the a/c compressor, its a rectangle sensor about 2X4 inches with connectors on both sides. I think it's mounted to the intake mani..

edit- stole this from another threadthat's what i called the ICM...-

'97 doesn't have a DIS module. It is in the ECM (computer).
How are you checking for spark?
The crank trigger is probably now the most likely problem. Unless it is in the wiring.

have you tried looking at the cable that runs to the starter, i was muddin in my last ranger came home and it wouldnt start the next day. found out the cable from the starter had fallen off, fixed the problem, ran like it did before.

i was checking for spark buy pulling a plug wire off and sticking a screw driver in the end and holding it close to the metal while getting someone to roll it over to see if there was spark. i even tryed holding onto the metal part of the screw driver to she if i would get a shock, i know its not the smartest but i had to see if there was power. so far i can figure it out, im picking up a crank sensor tomorow and i hope thats the problem.

you're right. sorry for the bad info.

you're supposed to ground the DIS module? I have mine mounted to a aluminum plate zip tied to the fender... I don't think there's anything grounded touching it... seems to work fine until it starts misfiring from other reasons (most likely EGR or something), maybe I'm just getting too high of RPM's, would help if my tach worked. I'll probably ground the module at some point though

My grandfather and I did the screwdriver test for his little kuboda (Like 70 yrs old, the tractor i mean) we had no spark, I told him his solenoid/coil was bad. he went and changed spark plugs and it fired right up.....Just a thought.

thanks for all the replies, i finally figured out what the problem was. the crank sensor was gone. i put a new crank sensor in and rolled it over and it fired right up. thanks everyone :icon_thumby:
