This is also quite common in ag. a lot of sprayers are set up this way so they can drive over the crop with the tires between the rows and never disturb the crop. they are also capable of about 35mph which makes them a little bit less of a nuisanceon the road, compared to combines and tractors.
Combines and choppers use hydraulic motors in the rear axle to assist. Heck, most of a combine is ran hydraulically. When front wheel assist came out for tractors they tried it with hydraulic motors in the front. It was nearly impossible to keep the front end going the same speed as the rear so it was abandoned.
It isn't the drivetrain that limits the top speed of tractors and combines as much as the crappy balance.
They usually get to rocking pretty good front to rear at warp speed.
