Ancilliries same/different between 2.9 and 4.0?

Hi

As per the title, do the 2.9 and 4.0 share any common parts?

The 2.9 Cologne engine used here in the UK was a Ford Europe product (we never had the Ranger, but they used it in large saloon/sedans), and there is annoyingly little crossover with the US 2.9.

However, US 4.0 Explorers were sold here in the UK, so these do show up in scrapyards.

Are any engine parts the same between 2.9 and 4.0? Specifically the alternator? And are there differences in ancillaries between the OHC and OHVs?

Mine's a 1990 Ranger, so I know they're of little use to me re body, suspension etc, but it'd be great if I could scavenge engine parts.

Nothing in the accessory drive is going to swap between a 2.9 and a 4.0. The 2.9 was always a V-belt and the 4.0 was always a serp belt. Very different mountings and such. Also, since the 4.0 block is taller you can't just swap the whole thing because the holes don't line up.
 
Thanks for the reply. I guess if anything on mine breaks, I'll just have to swap in the whole 4.0 engine... ;-)

I was going to say, when I replaced the alternator in my '88 BII they sold me the one for the 4.0 and I just swapped the pulley from my old one to the new one, put the serpentine style pulley on my old one and they took it as a core return with no issues.
 
I've read on here somewhere that the exhaust manifolds swap, but not the crossover tube.

Power steering pump. The power steering pump is the same part. The alternator is very very different.

There were some serp-belt pullied alternators that use the same case as the 2.9, but they are pretty much all from late-80s and early 90s small block engines.

The 4.0 alt looks like any other alt ive seen on mid 90s+ fords. You sure thats not a later 4.0 alt?

Not being argumentive, just curious, Seems like most fords ive seen from 80s to early 90s had the 2.9 style, not just the small blocks.

100% sure. The listing I pulled that picture from is for a Mustang SOHC, which has different bolt spacing on the side with two bolts, but that's it.

Here is one from a listing for a 90 Ranger 4.0.

That is the earliest you can find a 4.0 in anything.

Very interesting, thanks. Mine was definitely the 2.9 body that you posted (same bolt holes as my old one, internal regulator, though per the instructions that came with it, I rewired my harness with their included parts for a better fit). It was sold as the 4.0 alt though. I guess I got lucky that they didn't have it listed correctly.

I've also read somewhere that when doing a 4.0 swap into a 89-up BII or Ranger, you can use your old alternator if necessary but you need to put a serpentine pulley on it. Maybe not though?
