Hey guys I hope I dont get bashed for this but im building a heep for my father in law. It has the 4 banger and no power for cruising in the mountains. His son sold him what is supposed to be an Amc 360. I get it home and look it over and it looks just like a mopar. I havent gotten into it yet but how can i visually tell the difference? I need to know so I can make dicisions on the rest of the drivetrain.:dntknw:

No pics, camera broke and dont use 1 enough to justify buying a new 1. Maybe this will prompt wifey since its for her dad.

Shouldn't need codes even. The Mopar stuff has a logo stamped or cast into it.

I havent cleaned it up yet to check for ID. Ill try to get at it tonight but im not very motivated in 115 degree weather.:fie:

Distributor in front = AMC
Distributor in back = Mopar

Google is a wonderful thing.

Awesome 281 ranger. I know this was the right place to ask. Btw I did a google search and came up with nothing. Hopefully I can get done with this quickly and get back to my stuff.

AMC's have the distributor in the front cocked at an angle pointing towards the driver's side

SM Mopars have it in the back a-la SBChev.

BB Mopars have the dist in the front cocked at an angle pointing towards the passenger's side

Just do a google image search. Then compare the pictures.:D

not all small mopars are in the back, and not all big mopars have it in the front

You're confusing the newer vs the older Mopar wedge V8's. There was a "big block 318 that was different from the small block version. As for the big blocks, all I remeber was the distributors were always in the front, angled toward the passenger side

:icon_confused:

Let's see.... SBM's include the 273, 318 poly (aka "wide block" or "big block" even though it shares componentry with the LA318), 318 LA, 340, 360, Magnum 318 and Magnum 360, ALL of which have the distributor in the back.

BBM's include: 350,383 (both low and tall deck),400, 413, 426 (wedge and hemi) and 440, ALL of which have the distributor in the front angled to the passenger's side.

This does not include early poly's or hemis (331, 354 and 392) as they were around really before the "big block small block moniker's became, but do share some interchangeability with the SBM's.
