Okay whilst trying to cure my '99 4.0s fuel problem, I decided to swap the fuel filter first and if that doesn't cure it then I'd move to the fuel pump.

Well I went out and bought the filter. And the special Metal quick disconnect tool recommended for $15....

Well either I'm retarded or something is not quite right. I remember seeing the Fat disconnect (looks like a donut on the line) end on my old '96 Ranger...
I do not see this on the '99.

Did I buy the wrong tool??

Here's what I see:

If you got the metal quick disconnect, then Yes you got the correct tool, slide in half of the loop in, work it in, then the other. Its can be a pain, even more if its the original. Good luck.

OK! I'm not retarded!

I did have the correct tool.
But either the wrong filter was on there or no one should EVER use the Fram fuel filter G-7092.
The outer stems of the filter are half the length of the new one that is supposed to be on there. because of this I couldn't get the tool in there.

If you run into the same problem as me, will will have to use a hack saw and cut the old filter off. Rated a 9/10 in my fun sh*t to do under the truck while working with gasoline.

Here's the old filter with the tool next to it.

Heres the new filter installed.

Here's what I ended up having to do to get the old one off.

Yeah, those things are a pain in the ass. Mine had burs on the original factory filter and they got hung up on the catch springs. Talk about a pain in the ass.

I've ran into that at work with aftermarket fuel filters being shorter like that. You cannot get the dissconnect tool in there! I just cut them off with a hacksaw and put in a motorcraft filter.

Sometimes people are dumb and put the wrong one in......

"i don't understand. it fit just fine."
doesn't mean you should use it.
the previous owner probably helped himself or gave the wrong year when getting the filter.

I like my nylon lines with those stupid plastic clips. a flat head screwdriver and your done.
