Why is it that people who love to work on their vehicles spend all of their free time and extra money doing it? Yeah, you save money by not going to the shop, but all of the extra crap you work on would go unnoticed by anyone else therefore saving money in the long run............ Just seems like us mechanically inclined people do a lot of overkill when it comes to preventative maintenance.

its usually worth it in the end tho.. having a half full wallet is nice too!

i watch people come into auto service garages and just fork ova the money!! i just giggle to myself hehehe hahaha

It is nice to do things the way you want them done, and your truck lasts longer with preventative maintenance.

I can't own something that doesn't have problems therefore little things drive me completely crazy and I always have to be working on it, I can't live with things that make noise I fixate on them till I drive myself crazy. I got a shop quote for my timing chain cover gasket replacment for 1500 bucks my step dad and I did it for the cost of parts(100 bucks) and 8 hours on a sunday. Thats why I fix my own stuff when I can.

you cant put a price on learning and the example above is a good reason why we do what we do

because we know when something is going bad so we fix it. Most people dont notice that their car is out of gas let alone that a wheel bearinbg is going out until it strands them.

i like knowing that my hand has used the tool to tighten every nut and bolt on my truck that way if it leaves me stranded i dont get as mad as i would if a shop had done it. saving money is good too. i like mods that people look at you crazy for doing. exapmle: i tore out my carpent because it catches dirt, pull out the bod plugs and you can hose it out. where i live people call me a redneck for that and then i look at the dirty as carpet in there car an laugh. ill wrench on my truck until i die wrenching on my truck.

I cant even begin to think how trying to almost double the HP on the mighty 3.0 by supercharging, water injection, roller rocker, hours of porting polishing, headers, exhaust, etc could be considered overkill, its just a labor of love for me. :D

I just neglect it until it breaks and I have to fix it--I spend very little time fooling with something that works. I would rather build new stuff than work on old stuff.

My Girlfriend asked my that question everytime i go to autozone. Becasue i want my truck to be better then everyone elses! lol even when i say man that looks badass, it can always be better!! and, its fun!

hahahaha i get that all the time from my gf hahahaha i thought i was the only one

Nope I get it too:) She just can't figure out why I like to spend the day crawling around under it. But fun money is more fun than maintanence money for sure but each have their upside. Most girls will never understand why we like to work on stuff, but they will spend a whole day shopping and get nothing achieved and have new clothes that they get bored with in a week. My ex drove her car for a week with it knocking and overheating and never noticed anything was wrong until I heard her coming down the road and saw the trail of steam that never ended:) Blown head gasket because of a 10 dollar thermostat, and never told me the damn thing was pegged in the red.

oh goodness ive been there before i had to drive my gfs car and noticed it was climbing into the red on the temp gauge and i asked her if it did that alot and she said yea and it had been going on for about a month and i asked her why she never brought it up and she said she forgot to tell me till the same thing happend to her blew a head gasket

I'm a mechanic. I fix things.

Whichever car I am driving at the moment, I make a list in my head of what it needs. And then I fix it.

I like my shit RIGHT.
