i think i need a new alternator.. here the symptoms:
1: chirps like crazy when first started, goes away after a while.. disconnected the belt and no chirp, only 1 belt with crank, water pump and alternator.. i doubt W/P has intermittent chirping issues.. sometimes it will chirp while driving or accelerating

2: speedo flickers +/- 5mph when it chirps, plus the battery meter needle will move if lights are turned on, like if the engine wasn't running. seems to run poorly when alt acts up, mabey the voltage is goofing with the sensors?

3:ticking sound wich i suspect is bearings going out, gona test tommorow if its were the ticking is from.

what you guys think, alt dying or just coincidence?

since rangers around here are hard to find, what other fords have a compatible alt in them?

When my alternator went out, it was more like the truck running off the battery and finally the battery died and the truck wouldn't start. Put a new alternator in it, the old ones bearing were DONE FOR, and then it ran just fine. Not sure about the chirping?? Is there a bird in your engine?

funny you should mention birds, one time i found a dead bird in my last ranger, poor bastard musta got hit near the CAI and sucked in..

Mine chirps when the belt is loose...

The belts have to be tight...very tight...if you can push the belt even 1/8" it is loose...check it for tension and use a pry bar if necessary to take all the slack out of it...

If it still chirps then the bearings may be shot...

True Story Bro. lol

speedo is not related to the alternator, voltage meter could be battery or alternator... i'm guessing battery...

if the chirp is there on cold start, and goes away after a few seconds, very slim chance it's alternator

My suzuki used to chirp when the battery was low...once I got it started...and it would chirp until the battery was charged...usually less than five minutes...but it was the alternator chirping...

Power steering belts used to chirp on some of my vehicles...so I stopped buying vehicles with power steering...and now I feed the birds so when I want to hear chirping I go stand by the bird feeder...
