Alternatives to the HR980 compressor

Anyone know of any alternatives/replacements to the HR980 compressor used in the 80s?

Mine has failed (1987 Ranger 2.9L).

I haven't read much good stuff about the HR980s, so I'd like to replace my bad one with another type of compressor if I can.

My problem, other than coming up with custom mounting brackets is that my hoses have screw-on connectors for the compressor. Any new A/C stuff seems to be spring-lock type.

Anyone swap their HR980 compressor for something else?

I really need some A/C.

Thanks.

I don't know much about the HR980 compressor (without looking, I assume it's something different than the FS-6 compressor my '90 uses), but mine with a new Visteon FS-6 has been fine for two years now converted to R-134a. Maybe swapping the components over from a '89-'92 model could be another option, which should then have all matching connectors (mine has compression fittings w/O-rings at the compressor manifolds and evaporator inlet & outlet, spring-locks are used at the suction hose where it attaches on the accumulator and at the condenser fittings)

Is there a difference between the comp. used on a 1983 and an '87. Mine had some goo and dust under the pully. I went to a junk yard and bought one for $35.00 and that was 5 or so years ago. Works great. I saw a lot of reasonable cost new and rebuilt units on the 'net.

My Ranger must be the only one in the whole world with a Tecumseh HR980 compressor with screw-on ports. The compressor itself isn't much thicker (measured front to back) than the clutch on it.

All of the compressors I find for Rangers are the fs 6 or fx 15 (I think that's the number) which are longer and usually have six groove pulleys for serpentine belts and springlock ports or some sort of hose manifold on the top of the compressor. Mine only has a 2 v groove pulley for the old regular fan belt application.

There must be a gazillion out there with the springlock connectors.

Anyone out there with an 80s model Ranger have any photos showing the hoses connected to their compressors?

I've got to come up with something. I'm donating this truck to an older lady and don't want to put a whole lot of $ into it. Other than the A/C issue, the truck is in fantastic shape.
