Alt swap question

Just kidding. I don't have the internal alternator.
So lets switch things up a little. My charging system has been a bit if a nightmare over the past several months (the externally regulated one) does anyone know a lot about them that can give me some things to check in the system? Symptoms have been: alts going bad, batteries not charging/ over charging. I have replaced: the regulator twice, the alt twice and the battery once.
