It's official, I took my truck to Transmissions of America and they said what I was expecting, It's about to die! I got a 83 ranger 4x4 with a c5 and it's been not wanting to go in drive when it'd cold lately. I adjusted the low/reverse band but it didn't help. I took it to them for a diagnosis and they said it's about to die and it is acting worse since they dropped the pan. The mechanic told me a temp fix I can do. The modulator is bad and causing sloppy shifts so I am going to replace that and he said get some Lucas Tranny conditioner and that will fix it temporarily. So my long winded question is this, I am getting a 289 with a 2wd c4 tranny from a 64 galaxy. should I rebuild the c4 and put in a different output shaft or just trade it for one out of a 4x4 that already has the output shaft I need?:icon_confused:
I'm gonna get one of those videos that show how to rebuild trannys. I am the type of guy who can see something being done and then do i t myself. I told the mechanic that and he said oh, they have those out now? Like he didn't know. I said yeah, if i mess it up, I'll bring to you in a basket and let you fix it! LOL

Don't know if this will help but mine was doing the same thing, till I replaced torque converter and put new seal and got the right tranny fluid in her. Good luck

This is a sublime opportunity to swap it out with a engine & trans out of an explorer. If you were gonna go through the trouble of redoing the tranny then go it all the way. A transmission mechanic of 20 years told me that even if it is the valve body and you redo just the valve body you make the other parts of the tranny susceptible to failure. (in the case of of an autommatic anyways) but if you were determined you could pick a kit up like this one cheap. VERY VERY VERY labor intensive and need some specialty tooling to do it... http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=8017521735&crlp=1_263602_263622&ff4=263602_263622&viewitem=&guid=7a46ad7a1290a04373d4e434ffbb72f8&rvr_id=&ua=WXF%3F&itemid=8017521735

This guy Glacier1991 (from the explorer forums) has a GREAT write up on his explorer trans rebuild. A good read if you wanna know what you are up against http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=140987&highlight=A4LD+transmission+rebuild

I would use the C5 before I use that C4. I just did a C4 from a 64 galaxy about 2 weeks ago, depending on where you get parts shift kits are kinda getting hard to find. Reguardless it's a early C4 with a smaller input spline in which the 70 and later C4's/C5s are better. They aren't rocket science. A fairly skilled and organized mechanic should be able to rebuild one with no problems. Get a V8 bellhousing, torque converter, and a C4 valvebody and your C5 will work fine with a V8.
