on a 1990 ranger 4x4. do you know what front end it has under it and on the front on the spindle(the part the axle goes though) the inside of it where the needle bearing is does it have a race on it or does the axle just ride on it.

The reason I ask is because I have some play in the axle and the bearing but it dosent look like the bearing is bad. I dont know if someone has but the wrong axle in it or the wrong spindle. Thanks for your time.

With a 4.0L you have a d35 front axle. There is no bearing race, it rides on the axle. It is normal for the axle to move around in the spindle a bit.

Is it normal for it to move enough that the axle has scared and a grove in the axle?

No, definatly not.

If the shaft is scarred it's junk and the spindle bearing
(which is replaceable is toast)

I helped a friend pull a diff chunk this weekend and we
left the spindles and stubs behind.
If you need them I know right where to get them quickly

I looked at them then pointely put them inside the cab of the
truck we were pulling them off of...
