they don't have the internet on vacation!?!? yeah that figures. I pmed him on the 8th, he hasn't been active since the 7th. just my luck lol

There is internet everywhere. I even had it in Hue, Vietnam in 2005. Really. That was by far the cheapest way to make a phone call to the US (it worked out to something like 40 cents an hour).

But that doesn't mean one wants to go looking for an internet cafe while on vacation. I didn't check my e-mail even once on the recent New Zealand trip, even though every hotel in the country seemed to have a coin-op kiosk. Though NZ$1 per 5 minutes adds up (phone calls from NZ were cheapest with a pay phone credit card plus a prepaid calling card).

I have a small child. You don't disappear for two weeks without a phone call nearly every day.

Now, we think he's old enough for a transoceanic flight. He wasn't last year nor in 2005.
