Background: 2005 xlt 3.0 v6 automatic. power locks and windows. NO PATS system, but have keyless entry with the remote separate from the key. the plastic part broke where it attaches to a key chain, and i don't want the same thing to happen again.

what I want:

either one of those switch blade style keys, where the key part flips out from the handle, and has the keyless entry buttons in the handle, or one of the fixed keys that dont flip out, but still has the buttons in the plastic handle. question is, will i be able to get it programmed to my truck, since i dont have PATS?

Umm.........????

Who told you that an 05 Ranger doesn't have PATS?

If you have keyless entry, then you have PATS. Your key look like this:

or
ROTUNDA011-R0164.jpg

Both are PATS keys, there is a chip in them that disarms the anti-theft system.

This key is a "NON-PATS" key:

Never seen the "switch blade" style thing before, not sure if it would work or not.

The one in the 2nd link, is for a 06up Fusion/Milan/MKZ, and some later model Fords in 2010, and WILL NOT work on your Ranger.

That first one looks like the keys VW uses for their new cars.

And agreed your 05 should have PATS.

i have the second style key that chvlfrk posted (third pic), no chip in it. that's how i got the truck from the dealer, with a single fob. doing a carfax check, it showed that my truck was a fleet truck, so that may be why it doesnt have PATS.

Ok, had forgot bout "fleet" vehicles, they generally don't have PATS, so that explains it.
But without PATS, I don't believe you can use a key fob.

I will try to remember to ask one of our techs at work and will respond later.

So fleet vehicles don't have PATS? Carfax showed my truck as a fleet vehicle as well. I think it's first year was spent as a rental car and they guy I bought it from bought it with 20k miles on it. How can I check if I have PATS? I also have keyless entry

.

SORRY!

I thought I had already responded to this.......the best way to see if you have keyless entry is to check for the program mode:

Put your key in the ignition, with door closed, turn it into the ON (NOT start) position 8 - 10 time quickly endin in the ON position, if your door locks cycle (lock & unlock), then you have the keyless entry, if not, you don't.

i don't mean to disagree, but you can have keyless entry without a pats system (not talking ford spesific) it is possible it's an aftermarket system... i would say take your key to a hardware store, get them to cut you a key for 5$ and try it in the ignition... if the engine starts, you no have pats, if it doesn't start, you do...

if the 5$ key works, so will the ebay key...

i'm sure you can get those switchblade style keys or the fixed key, with ford pats chips in them also, being they are a ford blank as it is... would take some looking around... (if your truck ends up HAVING pats that is)

Some do. The Autozone trucks near me have PATS. And they lose alot of keys too.

i have factory keyless entry, no pats. will i be able to program an all in one key to use the keyless entry buttons, then get the key cut?

So your locks cycled to the program mode?

If so, you can buy a key fob for your specific application, but NO the all in one keys will not work in Rangers. SORRY!

i would just buy it, and try it in the ignition (see if the blank is right, before cutting it) and then try to program them, they have to be made for the vehicle they will be used on, as the RF codes and such are different... kind of like a GE remote won't work on a panasonic tv... just make sure you buy one that says it's for your year ranger... if it doesn't work, you can return it to them and demand a full refund, or sell it on ebay yourself
