Hello all, I've got an 89 ranger. Was just wondering if the factory air filter box had an air temperature sensor. I bought the truck with a running issue and trying to eliminate possible problems I may not be able to see (cause its not there lol)

You won't have one in the airbox, but might in the intake tube near the maf, if your Maf is 4 wire, then you don't, its in the intake, if its 6 wire, then you would...

To my knowledge the 89's don't have a maf, is that correct?

My book shows a ACT sensor air charge temp would be in the plenum after the TB. It shows two wires. Pull it out and clean with rubbing alcohol or electrical cleaner. You must reset the computer by disconnecting the battery for at least 1/2 an hour whenever you clean or change a sensor.

The air charge temp sensor is the same as the intake air temp sensor your talking about that was located in the air filter housing the only difference is it is under manifold vacuum pressure put a little thread sealant on it when you put it back in. I believe if you have a MAF mass air flow sensor that replaces the MAP sensor manifold absolute pressure.

Will give it a good cleaning, thanks everyone :-)

His truck does not have a MAF. The 89 ranger uses a speed density tune in the ECU and has a MAP sensor. You can not just switch them. It doesnt work like that. And im 90% sure you shouldnt have an ambient air temp sensor in the filter housing. Mine didnt have one.

Just to give you a brief explination of why it wont work switching, The MAP sensor reads manifold pressure, manifold pressure is always very close to 0 at wide open throttle, and will not change with RPM. They use the RPM as a key element in tuning a speed density system. Due to the fact that any time the computer sees 0 pressure from the MAP sensor, the signal never changes.

The mass air flow system uses the MAF sensor to actually calculate how much air is coming into the engine. The computer knows the RPM of the engine and uses it for ignition timing, but for fuel delivery they use mainly the throttle position, intake temp, and MAF reading. The MAF reading will change with engine speed at wide open throttle.

The only way to change the system over is to Put a newer ECU in, which doesnt work without the new sensors and wiring involved, or to reprogram the current ECU, along with some wiring. Both are not simple swaps.
