Has anyone heard of doing this to their ranger. Seems if you take out your airbox and remove the silencer/baffle you can get a louder sounding engine, and more hp. ???? I am stumped by this. If i did this would it affect my maf or anything? Sounds like it would improve the cold air system. Please let me know what you think.
Oh wow just saw the caps, sorry

there's tons of threads on this. All it will do is make your intake louder.

Lol that thing is impossible to get out though I tried for a few minutes and thought nah not worth it, easier to get pvc besides it's straighter (less turbulence), and you can swap the original back in just in case something happens

If you take the silencer off a gun, does it add more gunpowder to the cartridge? No... Just makes it louder... Studies have shown that the amount restriction needed to decrease the performance of an engine, are so substantial that of the resistance were to be placed on the air filter, the air filter would get sucked out of place... A small piece of plastic isn't going to do much...

Cold air intakes on most engines do nothing but look cool, and infact, a lot of them actually increase the temperature of the intake, vs stock... The temperature will make a MUCH more noticeable difference in your fuel economy than the power you can feel, and there will be a greater impact on your fuel economy from tank to tank purely from atmospheric pressure, humidity, driving habits and even traffic conditions...

If you want to modify your intake to some functional purpose, take a look at my build thread at the inner fender snorkel I built, it routes the intake away from where water will be while wheeling

it helps a bit. it wont give you much power but it does help reduce the restrictions.

as for the gunpowder thing, idk what weez is goin on about. if you remove a silencer, you increase range because theres less restriction.

Good point.....i'm going to put a pound of gunpowder in every tank of gas...it's much cheaper than "fuel booster" from autozone.

Give reports on what grains of powder you use and what mpg increase or decrease you get per tank I'd be interested in trying this in my cub cadet mower so i have more power for mowing.. tks door gunner.:icon_twisted:

It's not a perfect analogy, I said more powder in the charge, not longer range...

The restriction from the intake silencer will decrease air (and as a result of that, fuel) into the combustion chamber, which is why I said powder in the charge...

Your intake silencer is going to cause less resistance than a moderately dirty air filter, and a dirty air filter will make a small enough difference that you would need to be at the track, where your 1/4 mile times are being tracked to the thousandth of a second, and even then, if you have ever done any racing, you would know that you are looking at a greater difference from how straight you keep your wheels while going down the track

Look at the diameter of the silencer, compare that to the diameter of the throttle body, I bet there's not much difference, and possibly the throttle body is smaller than the silencer, which means that your silencer is causing absolutely no restriction...
