Hello guys.
I just purchased an 86 Ranger 4x4 with the 2.9 V-6 in it. Next wednesday im flying down to Boise & getting to work on the truck, so I can drive it back up here in Bonners Ferry where I live. (about 550 mi). I bought the truck from a buddy of mine who bought it about 3 years ago from the original owner. Since he's had it, its only been driven maybe 3000 miles & has sat the last year. It has a total of 94000 original miles. It has the notorious oil leak at the valve covers, which will be replaced. Among many other things. I will start a separate thread & list what all is being done so far.

My main question is that I was thinking of disabling the egr valve & removing the AIR pump while im down working on it. I dont need to worry about emissions & frankly dont like the idea of feeding my motor its own crap. If I do this does it cause any codes? If so is it just a soft code & will not affect the way it runs? TIA

I could be wrong, but I don't think there is an air pump.

I think removing EGR from a vehicle is an exceptionally bad idea. Here's why.

1. When I fixed the EGR on my Bronco 2, the mileage went up. We're talking at least a few miles per gallon here. So there's one reason to keep it.

2. On most vehicles the EGR is also there to control pinging. Introducing exhaust gases into the intake will slow the burn and reduce the tendency to ping. Sometimes the computer will compensate for your EGR removal by detecting the pinging with a knock sensor and running rich and / or pulling timing. That is only if the computer is programmed to do that. If it isn't, well, I guess your motor is just going to ping, now isn't it.

So unless you want a motor that gets bad mileage and pings itself to death, leave the EGR hooked up.

If you absolutely know more than the Ford engineers and are set on removing it, I've heard that a '88 or newer computer will work correctly as they came without EGR.

I think all you need is a newer brain. Pretty sure 88 on don't have egr. I've got a 92 or 93 brain and an 87 engine. But some of the 90's are cali maf brains.
Mine idles a tad high, around 900-1000. I think because the iac might be different after 88, different part#'s anyway.

If it runs better with the egr hooked up, Ill leave it alone. That was the point of this thread to find out if there are any negative sides if it is disabled. To be honest, Im more of a diesel guy than a gas guy & I know that in a diesel egr valves just do nothing except cause problems & lower fuel economy. Thanks for the reply.

Thanks. Ill keep that in mind. I just dont like the basic principles of an egr system. I just figured the engine would run better on 100% fresh air rather than sucking its own exhaust back in. I know I wouldn't like to breathe my own farts. LOL

I'm glad you decided to make the right decision. You need to remember that you are not an engine. :icon_thumby:

Give a guy a choice between the right answer, and the one he wants to hear, guess which one he'll take every time?

Oh well, at least you tried.

The good news is that it's not your motor that'll beat itself to death...

Disabled EGR system with an EGR computer will cause lower economy and other issues because the computer expects it to be there. If you put a non-egr computer on an EGR engine it will make the EGR system inert with none of the side effects. I have that setup right now because my 87 computer got wet but I had an 88 one handy.

EGR in a gas engine is not nearly as much of a pain as it is on a diesel. For one, gasoline engines don't coke up as bad. It does help with fuel economy by displacing air/fuel mix during high-speed cruising and helps to kill ping.

Frankly, diesel egr would be a lot less of a pain if they'd put the tap after the particulate filter.

Thanks for all the replies. Sorry i have'nt been on for a little while. If these motors run better with the egr intact, it will stay on the motor. I didnt know they actually would get better mpg's with the egr. The truck is coming along. Just taking a lot longer than anticipated with the weather & few surprises that came along with the truck. Ill start a thread in the rbv garage detailing progress.
