I have a 1989 ford ranger with 2.3L. I was wondering if it would be worth the time to make a custom intake for it or just leave the stock one? Have a open element filter or something?

Thanks,
Josh

my truck is basically the same, and the stock intake system isn't that bad, they run pretty much the same size filter on 4.0L rangers... I pulled that hose off of the exhaust manifold and tossed it a couple years ago, haven't noticed a difference yet

your factory intake is a true cold air setup...running an exposed filter element would be a serious downgrade.

the hose running from the exhaust manifold to the intake is called a preheater. if its functioning properly, it will help the truck run smoother in cold weather, warm up quicker, reduce fuel consumption in cold weather, and will not cost any horsepower once the engine is warm. its not a necessity by any means, but its nice to have...especially if you live somewhere where there are real winters.
