I have a a 1087 Bronco II, good shape. Want to get a little more horsepower out of it. Any suggestions without going overboard? I'm pretty "low knowledge" too when it comes to cars. I'm currently in my very early stages of learning.

And any recommendations on what kind of air filter to get? Thanks in advance.

James.

The kind that filters air would be optimum.

Frankly air filters are all pretty much the same. I regularly denounce K&N air filters for MAF equipped engines, but yours is not. On the other hand, unless you have a seriously plugged up air filter there is little to nothing to gain there, it's more of a maintenance item, like an oil change, than a performance item. Most of them are the same, paper ones filter better, cleanable ones like K&N flow a bit more. Fram actually makes a really good air filter, but I wouldn't touch their oil filters with a 12 foot pole.

If you want more real power, read up on the 4.0 swap, then find a wrecked Explorer.

K&N's will save you money in the long run but cost a lot up front. You don't think you have a MAF on an 87 BII so I wouldn't worry about the oil fouling it. I usually buy NAPA Gold air filters for most of the family vehicles.
