Not sure if this is feasible or not.

what all involved in changing the air box (air filter & upper and lower housing) from a 88' to 86?? yes both are 2.9

I kind of prefer the clip on upper filter box from the 88'... seem much more service friendly.

On the 86'... below the air filter lower housing...it sits on a plastic box that vacuum lines at ported to...is that just a plastic box just vacuum canister?? (it sits right above the inner fender well)

yes, it's just a vacuum canister.

it's used for the egr system, so if the system has been otherwise rendered inoperative you could remove it with no ill effects.

Nope, everything EGR wise is intact and operational.

does that mean this swap is out of the question??

You could relocate the reservoir to someplace else, like under the battery tray or something. or you could find a different style that would relocate to a different place easier.
