Anyone know of anything aftermarket I can buy to get a bit more HP? I have looked but cant find anything.

It depends what you're looking for. I've seen chips and headers, other than that, I can't think of anything. You could upgrade to a larger throttle body off of an 86/87 2.9 also

Something like that. A different throttle body, intake, or maybe different injectors. How much of a difference does the throttle body from an 87 make?

The 86/87 throttle body makes a nice difference. The 88 and later 2.9 TBs are 52mm and the earlier ones are 58mm. That's a big difference. I remember reading somewhere that it doesn't increase power it just widens the powerband.... Its a noticeable difference for a cheap (or free) mod.

Ok thanks. I might have to try that out. Did you do that yourself also?

Yep. It took about 5 minutes. Unbolt the old one, unplug it...do the opposite for the new one. That's it.

Easy enough. I will try to find one at pull-a-part or somewhere else for cheap. Plus 1 rep for helping out the noob.

Actually the big difference with the larger '86-87 Throttle body is a subtle one....

you see the on the '86-87 the last 25% of the pedal motion doesn't do a whole lot
(the TB is really bigger than it needs to be) so on the later trucks to get a little
more precise control near full throttle.

The sneaky thing is that if you are putting the "big" throttle in an '89-up 2.9
OR running with an '89-up Computer the computer will be "fooled" from going into "open loop" until your foot is actually against the floor.

Driving with the bigger TB you can actually back out of the throtle and feel a slight increase in acceleration as the engine actually makes more power in "closed loop"
when the computer isn't running the engine at "full Rich"

Other than that don't expect a difference.

I've found that using the smaller throttle body increases throttle response, slightly.

I'm running the smaller throttle body on my '87 2.9L and it's more responsive than when it had the factory installed 58mm.
