Ive got an 87 ranger that didnt come with a tachometer stock. i installed a small sunpro on it and it worked for a little while, but then gave out(needle never rose) now ive got a new Equus tach, but its having the same issue. ive got a good ground on it. i tapped into the green wire pretty close to the IGN coil. would it being so close be an issue? or am i just not getting connection to the green wire no matter how i splice it(lol)? ideas????

I know you lol'ed at the idea but it sure seems that way.

Where do you have it grounded at, do you have the light circut hooked up and does it work?

The lights on it are working great and respond with the dimmer, got the light hooked into the dash lights fuse and the 12v power is leeching off the radio fuse. super unprofessional, i know, but its just a temporary deal atm

The green wire for tach hookup IS the ground.

The "other ground" on a tach is for the backlight.

So to get a tach pulse the tachometer only needs power, when key is on only, and then a hookup to the "-" in the coil(green wire)
You can hook it right to the "-" on the coil.

The coil always has power, when key is on, it is sparked by grounding it, that is what the tachometer is reading, each time points, module or computer grounds the coil the tach gets a ground pulse, same as the coil.

According to an Equus tach wiring diagram I looked at there will be TWO power wires, BOTH need to be hooked up, Red wire for 12v power when key is on, White wire for 12v adjustable backlight power.
Black wire for backlight ground
Green wire to "-" on Coil.

So the Red(12v) and Green(GND) wires are what make the tach needle move.
The White and Black wires are for the backlight

Brown wire is for inductive hookup on spark plug wire, not needed if Green wire is used.

I figured that if you had the light circut working then the 2 remaining wires, would be for the tach and your hook up would be correct, not a confused witch ground wire to use. does it come with the inductive clip or is it an option, if you have it, you may want to check function with that, did you by it new or was it used?

i had a bad 12v input, found anew spot to leach off of and it works great!, thanks!

I have the RX-2ns hooked up to my F4 and its the brown wire that receives the rpm signal, for the wiring diagram that you posted up are those wires bike side or tach side. Ill look for a wiring diagram for the F2 but here is the one I made for the F4 I hope it helps a bit.
