09 Ranger, aftermarket key cut from a locksmith…..

Got it cut a couple weeks back and in the past week it’s had issues starting. Son said it will turn on the accessories but won’t start right away…. Doesn’t do it every time and he’s eventually able to get it to start. I’m giving him the original as a spare to test next time but figured I’d ask….

Has any had any issues with aftermarket keys like this?

It's a chip key, so it *should* either work.. or not work. Sounds like you might have something else going on

I’d talk to the locksmith.

There are keys out there that are cheap knock offs that may or may not work. When I cut replacement chip keys, I buy the official keys. Strattec is the manufacturer for Ford keys, the official licensed manufacturer.

There may be something else going on, but if the factory key works reliably, it may be an issue with the new key. If neither work reliably, there’s a problem with the truck side of things.

Also, chip keys don’t like being bunched with a lot of keys or metal. Remember, this is an RFID type system so metal can cause interference. I keep my truck keys on separate rings with only the keys for the truck on it and my spare set that I have is only the truck keys plus my two common padlock keys. So each set is door/ignition, locking gas cap, truck cap if there is one or toolbox keys if it has toolboxes, and the spare has two padlock keys. House keys and such have their own ring.

Thanks, it is a Strattec key they made. I called them up and I’m going to bring it back this week. He said they rarely have any issues but it’s possible it’s bad key or something. It’s random but I’m going to play around with it and see if I can duplicate it more. I just figured maybe something needed to be reset or cleared from the memory bank???
