Aerostar 4X4

Rulebreaker, You need to seriously research the c-5 installation. Built right you won't break the c-5. I would really rather see a c-4 conversion. That would move the transfer up closer yet but, also be stronger. Remember the torque converter is the issue. A custom c-4 converter would be cheaper than a c-5. I may be able to get you everything you need but, that won't be cheap.
I will fix the TK regardless, At least you will be able to drive it. This is research, the ultimate test for the TK4.
The TK5 uses a continuous mesh reverse as well but, the gears are straight cut giving it that nice reverse whine.

Wow that looks much worse than i thought. That would explain why it would jump out of reverse with a loud bang. I had a TK4 laying around years ago that I thought i would never need again. Just shows you never say never. Thanks Mutant pony for fixing it for me. I've never had a stick apart before and probably would miss the reason it failed and just fix the results of failure. RB

I looked into it a little before and from what I gathered you can get a low stall converter for a MustangII 2.8L that is better (for use behind the 4.0L)than the RBV high stall converter. I found a tranny shop local that would sell me that converter for just over a $100. I guy just north of me would overhaul the C5 i have for $200. I'm not sure what flex plate and starter I would need. I have an A4LD flex plate and starter but I'm not sure they will work. Then there is cooling it. I would probably need an axillary cooler with fan as wheeling in the snow is where I would kill the C4 I used to run in the Bronco before I went with the NP435. So all in all I'm looking at $500 to run the C5 if I need to buy a flex plate and starter. I havent even looked into the C4 route but I did have an 84 Ranger that I pulled the 2.8L TK4 out of and put a 5.0L C4/C5 tranny in so I do know the two trannys have many interchangeable parts but don't know much about using them behind the 4.0L. Anyone know the specifics? RB

I put a C4 in my '86 ranger 4x4. And mine orginally had an A4LD and the flexplate for the A4LD was different than the C5 one. I can't remember which, but it either bolted the torque converter closer or farther from the engine. Luckily for me my '83 ranger came with a C5 so i had all the parts. The only down side is i had to disable my '83 ranger with a 302 in it. and by the way your aerostar is sweeeeeett!!!

The TK4 lives! Well, almost. It'll be done by the weekend for sure.
The Mustang II converter would be a C4. C5s didn't come out till some time in the 80's

Hopefully I can get it in before my wife delivers as she is due any day now. RB

I got up at 6am and helped my dad change the AC compressor on his Sable. Holy crap what a job. Ended up tearing the entire front of the car off to change it. The bumper, core support, headlights, radiator and everything that goes along with it had to come off. If they just made the car 4" longer all this could be avoided. 1 more reason I like trucks and No Honda does not build a truck in my opinion. Anyway I got the TK4 today and Mutant Pony did a fabulous job on cleaning it up. I had power washed and wire brushed it with marginal success. I got it put back in and run out of ambition. I just need to put the t cases back in and the skid plate and drive shafts and we will be back on the road. RB

Right on man, good to hear it's going back together smoothly.

It is hard to do a good job building something if you have to stop and wash your hands every five minutes. It is not quite show quality but, clean enough that you won't get dirty handling it. You will have to wash it down with some brake clean to get the assembly lube off it though. I had put it on the pass. seat of my truck to deliver it. I went around a corner a tad fast and ended up with a TK4 in my lap. When I dropped it off, I noticed there was a fair sized pocket of lube in the drum liner that I packaged the trans in.

Well my wife's water broke this morning so it's going to be on hold. The Tcase flange has some assembly lube on it so I'm going to pick up a can of brake clean before I put the T cases in. Wish me luck I'm off to the hospital. RB
