AEM Dryflow Air Filters.....

Anybody have any experiece with them? Technical lab tests comparisons between them and say, K&N or other aftermarket cone filters? Real world experience on a daily?

ive heard some mixed reviews on them but havent actually seen a scientific test done. i ran across a test though that tested another dry flow filter called apexi and it tested really good. filtered better than the k&n and had more hp gain

I have been using a AEM cone filter for a little more then two years now. I love it. I have used the K&N cone filters for a long time. This AEM Dryflow cone filter is the cat's meow!!! I can tell you the sound that comes out of it at acceleration is really cool. It sounds much better then the K&N, cleans better then the K&N and I don't have to oil it or worry that I put too much oil on the K&N and loose performance due to putting too much oil on it. I just rinse it off when it gets dirty and towl dry it (or let it dry for about 20 mins.) and put it back on. My filter still looks brand new.

I know several things for sure:

1) gas milage has increased
2) performance has increased (pulling power, up hill power)
3) idle performace has increased
4) engine start is better (I can just hit the key and the motor turns over and starts much faster then before with the K&N). I tried this several times. I put the K&N back on and started the truck and it turned over about 4 times and then fired. I put the AEM filter back on and the truck fired on the first cranked. Several of my buddies wanted to know 'Hey!! How come your Ranger starts so fast all the time'?

The AEM filter is worth a try.....
this coming from a guy who has used K&N filters on all my trucks, cars, and bikes (drag ,street, road racers and dirt bikes).

^^Good enought for me, Straycat. I've always had K&N's on my rigs and currently have one on the ranger since I bought the truck.


I've seen good things on the AEM's, but it's all from the manufacturer, and we all know how manufacturers advertise unrealistic results(E3 plugs for example).




Anybody else got any experience?

I have a AFE "DRY FILTER" for my 09 4.0, and i have taken it off and put it back on and i couldnt tell any difference to honest. Kinda wish I still had that 200 bucks in the bank account though. But that just opinion, it would be nice to see some back to back dyno results

I'm talking AEM dryflow replacement conical filter, not an AFE complete intake system.

This will be true with any aftermarket conical filter / intake. Don't throw your money away!

And the guy that says his Ranger starts quicker, he is suffering from a real bad case of "Placebo Effect"! Just take a look at the opening size in the
throttle body at the idle position, and tell me an air filter is going to make a difference in starting!

And the claims that K&N make about a particular air filter flowing "better than stock"
have be compared to basic reality.

Say for example the stock filter flows 800CFM at a particular pressure drop across the filter while a K&N might flow 1200CFM

The uneducated (read: SUCKERS!) will then conclude the K&N is "Better"

But this ignores completely that the engine only draws 375-400CFM at
the horsepower peak, so even the stock filter flows twice as much as
the engine can actually take in...

The arguement that these aftermarket intakes/filters/etc that are designed
to fit your vehicle and look cool but THE most important thing they do is take
money from your pocket and move it to theirs.

Will putting a 40amp fuse in the circuit for your stock radio give you killer bass and let your old Cassette radio play mp3-cd's?
From all the reports on some of these air intake systems I think the people
who believe in them would think so...

So, does a K&N flow better? Yup.

Is that difference at all relevant in real world terms?

Only to someone to whom "process" is more important than "Results".


An Air filter makes the engine start faster?
Hmmm... did you clean the battery terminals while you were installing that wizzbang air filter?

Let's not turn this into a "OEM ONLY" and "NO AFTERMARKET NO K&N" bullshit thread. There's been far to many and Mr. Ayers, I know you're aware of that.


I simply am asking about a particular brand of replacement filter. I want to steer away from oil bath filters, I don't want a paper disposable filter, and I simply cannot run a square drop-in or anyother OEM filter. I need a conical 'cone' filter that only the aftermarket can supply me. I'm looking for my best option.

The 'review' about starting better and the new sound it makes....I read over that because I simply didn't believe and didn't see that happening.

I've been on the Bob Is The Oil Guy site before...actually just before I made this thread. But didn't really find anything specific to what I was looking for.


Please, DO NOT turn this into another god damn K&N vs Paper thread.

I'm going to agree with AllenD. I run a K&N in my ranger and a fram in my explorer. Honestly, the only difference I notice between the two is the sound of the engine. I guess that makes me a SUCKER as AllenD stated.
