I went by a dealer in town who has a couple of 4th gen Rangers and had a look around. I saw a dark green 98 4.0 4x4 Off-Road that looked pretty good. I looked underneath it and the frame doesn't even really have surface rust on it. I tried to make sure everything worked but the battery was dead so i'm going back tomorrow. The guy said he recently replaced the transmission because the previous owner said it was slipping. It's an auto trans, how often do they last behind the 4.0? Also, how long do the 4.0's last? The odometer is showing roughly 156k miles and i've never messed with one before. The interior has the options I wanted (power windows and locks) and tinted windows. It has cloth bucket seats with a center console in the middle, not the typical cup holders on the floor like mine has. Is that a custom swap or did some rangers come with bucket seats and a center console? The only thing I don't like is the carpet interior. The guy wants $5995 on the tag and I asked him what he would take cash for it. He said he'd "deal" with me. What do you guys think I should offer? I was planning on taking about 5 grand or so and starting at like 4 and see where it goes from there. Is that too much of a low blow or no?
