Advanced timing

Has anyone tried running advanced timing on their truck. I'm curious if it gives a good horsepower gain or if it will cause problems

Evidenced by their propensity to ping, later model 3.0's come from the factory with their timing already advanced to the max. I've got a tuner and on my '00 I'll sometimes run a degree or two of extra advance in the winter when the outside temps are cooler, and there is a slight increase in power, but it's not worth going to a lot of trouble to do.
