i am right now running 36" TSL's with the stock 3.73 gears(temporary) and was wondering what my real mileage driven was. Does anyone know the percent difference, or even if the odometer said 100 miles, the actual miles traveled? I need to figure out the mpg cause the gas guage doesnt work. Thanks.

1. Fix the fuel gauge, or you'll be SCREWED if a gas station pump shuts off early.

2. Never calibrate by calculation. For instance, are those tires REALLY 36 inches? I really doubt it.... Always calibrate by measurement.

im just lookin for a general percentage here, nothing with 8 significant figures or anything.

Would need to know what the orignal size was?

Some guesses:
27 to 36: 25%
28 to 36: 22.23%
29 to 36: 19.45%
30 to 36: 16.67%
31 to 36: 13.89%

Drive down the highway and use the mile markers compared to what your odometer says. Its not exact, but will give you some idea.
the longer the distance the better.

i advocate doing that too.
so at least YOU can calculate what YOUR mileage really is.

i try not to drive it on the highway anymore. Shes no highway cruiser anymore.

and im not sure what the stock size tire of the 93 ranger 4x4 was. I bought this with 31s.

That's what I did to figure out mine. I'm running 31x10.50s and for every mile the oddometer shows I actually go 1.1 miles. I did it for 2 miles to get a better average. Also my speedo is 5 mph off. Speedo reads 55 actually doing 60.

the drivers door sticker will clue you in.

are 3.73's your stock gear ratio? we need to know stock tire size and gear ration to calculate this.

stock gear was 3.73, im guessing stock tire 27 or 28in.

What I did the other day to find the mpg with my new tires, is I went to the tech library, went to the "Check Speedometer After Tire Change", calculator. I put in 28" for the original tire size and 32" (actual diameter, not tire size, mine are 33x12.5x15, but they only measure about 32") for the new and put in what the odometer reads, in my case 135 miles (or mph), and it spit out 154 mph. I just droped the speed part it tells you how far you went.

No need to do anything more complicated...

If your original tires are 28's (235-75-15's) and you have 36's now, and your speedo reads 100 miles, You actaully went 128.6 miles. Simple as that.
But mind you that is if your tires actually measure 36" which I HIGHLY doubt they do. So just go in and plug in the numbers with the actual diameter and it'll tell you.

Hope that helps out some.

i think you meant that if i traveled 100 miles, i would have actually traveled 72 miles. Its less with larger tires. So im guessing its about a 25% difference. This is what I was thinking, cause that makes the truck getting about 10 mpg which is what I was expecting. If it was the other way, then that would mean i got 17 mpg which is impossible.

Im switching to 5.13s, this is gonna be a little higher than stock. It will be much closer than with the 3.73s though.

well if he is right, than im astounded by the mileage i got. I put in 10.017 gallons, and the odometer said 137.8

with a 25% diff. 137.8 actually means 171.8, which then means i got 17.15 mpg

other way around it was 103.8 miles, 10.36 mpg

No, I'm pretty sure that if you have bigger tires, the speedo/ odometer are going to read slower than you actually are going/ went.

If my speedo says I am going 60mph, I am ACTUALLY going closer to 70. So, therefor if my odomter says 60, I went closer to 70 as well.
That is how I think of it.

With a bigger tire, you are actually going further/faster in one rotation of the tire than you would with a smaller tire becuase the circumferance is larger.

Your speedometer isn't going to say 60mph, but you were going 70mph, but you only went 50 miles in that hour... It can't happen. That is how I understand your last post.

That is about what I got with "rough" numbers. My gas gauge said half a tank (10 gallons) and my odometer read right at 130miles (actually went about 155 or so). So about 15-15.5mpg. Before the tire swap, I was getting about 16mpg. But I have no clue if I had actually used 10 gallons or not, that's just going by the gauge.
