Acceptable Spindle wear? 94 4x4.

Just a question out of curiosity, what is the opinion on acceptable spindle wear on 4x4 rangers, dana 35 axle (not that it makes a difference). had water in my outer bearing and ran it dry, I was able to get it off before it seized to the spindle, but it did leave some markings. I realize the 'correct' answer is 'no wear is acceptable', but real world I'm not inclined to spend 150$+ on a new spindle. I polished it up with emery cloth, its almost totally smooth, but there are a couple "grooves" on the outer end, near where the locknut threading stops, not large, but noticeable visually and with the fingernail test. they are in a radial pattern going around about 1/2 the spindle. New bearing will slide on without force and they dont wiggle either. I'm inclined to say its fine, but maybe that's just wishful thinking. Secondly, with a damaged seating surface for the bearing like that, what risk am I taking just running with it for now? I can only assume it would lead to premature bearing wear and failure, but that might be worth the extra hassle of checking for play every week or so. Larger, offset tires, with a small lift means the bearings get done more often than the oil anyways. Thanks for your thoughts!

If the bearing fits snug I would be inclined to run it. Maybe pull the other side apart and compare bearing fitment.

Agreed. Have emery clothed many a burr off of a 2wd spindle through the years without a problem. As long as the inner race doesn't slop around or hang up, should be good. Same thing 2 or 4wd, in theory. Just different. Lol

Honestly, I would hit the junkyards and find another. I had an old 73 Highboy (4x4 with the dana 44 axle) and with a few small grooves on it, it would eat wheel bearings in no time. I replaced the bad spindle with a used one that was in way better shape than mine and never had an issue again. If its enough for you to ask, its enough to warrant replacement. Better to be safe and sorry.
