I just removed my ac today because it never worked and im trying to make space for a 5.0 swap. My truck is an 89 ranger 2.9 . well anyways i removed the big ac box on the passanger side of the motor connected to the firewall...now my truck wont start. did i remove and vaccuum lines during removing the ac box?

The computer ground is on that side. Make sure you didn't knock it loose. It is a round connector with one wire. If it is intact, look around for other wiring that many be disconnected. It would still start with a vacuum line disconnected.:)shady

i figured it out. when i was beating the plastic box off with a hammer i set the fuel pump inertia switch off lol

i know this is an old thread, but i was just wondering since i'm about to take my a/c out. can you take the big black box on the passenger side out, block off the hole in the firewall and keep the heater? or do i just need to disconnect the lines going to it and leave it there?

That big firewall box is only held on with FOUR nuts.

They ALWAYS come off fairly easily if you have an 11mm (or 7/16") deep socket.

Though one of them "hides" INSIDE the truck just below and
about 4" outboard of the inertia switch.

The other three are inside the engine compartment.

After that the box just pulls off.. and pulls off FAR FASTER than \
anyone with a hammer is gonna get it off.

And unbolting it won't break the INTERNAL box and the studs that
you'll need to mount the NON-A/C firewall box that simply bolts on

I've converted my truck back and forth from A/C to Non-A/C several times
and you'd never be able to tell...

a V8 will fit in the ranger engine bay with only SLIGHT modifications
to the A/C heater box (OR a body lift).

anyone do this to a 4.0 sohc? i don't use my a/c and want to delete it entirely. anyone have a how-to? thanks

Removing The A/c ?

IF YOU PLAN ON THROWING IT AWAY RIP IT OUT WITH SOME TOOLS IF YOU PLAN ON KEEPING IT JUST GET THE HAYNES BOOK AND THAT SHOULD GET U THROUGH IT:headbang:

When I see people admitting to caveman repair techniques I tend to lose all interest in offering them advise that I cannot convince myself that they can understand easily enough to justify the expenditure of my time in any attempt.

So I tend to switch gears and advise others to NOT follow their example.

I'll cheerfully smash things to access other things on a junker to save tome but it is never justified to smash stuff out of the way on a vehicle you are keeping

Like I said look around the box there are studs and nuts and the box just comes out.

I am wanting to rip out my A/C components as the system is empty and I can't refill (R12). The clutch is seized and I'm pretty sure the lines are shot. Will the evaporator and condenser get ruined if the system is open? Can I reuse these components with R134a? My intentions are when I have the money I will buy new lines, compressor, and drier, and reuse the evaporator and condenser.

Thanks

On an '88 I'd be very inclined to strip out the entire system
including the evaporator.

What to put back? get the condenser, evaporator and receiver out
of a '93-94 Explorer. the compressor and both lines to it from a '91-92 2.9 Ranger.

that way you avoid the system with the line that crosses over the top of
the fan shroud.

the earlier condenser has both connections on the passenger side
the '91-up has one connection on each side and avoids an entire
length of hose

this is exactly what I did when I wanted A/C back on my truck
while I still had a 2.9. It made keeping the A/C working much
easier (replacing ONE line) when I swapped to the 4.0

What about the wiring ? I've tried to unplug mine just to disable it and my RPMs went up and stayed there. I tried this to stop my 98 3.0L from surging!
