Light will go out when I park and will stay off upon re-start and will come on again only after I have started moving about 100 yards or so. Fluid is full and there is no change in the braking, just the light........It has rear ABS only and I replaced the sensor but to no avail. Ideas?

for some reason, the computer isnt getting a signal. you could have a toner ring or wiring problem.

If I remember right when theres a problem with the ABS system and the light is on the computer shuts off the ABS system. The brakes will still work under normal conditions but will not pulsate under a panic stop and will just lock up,so be careful. The most likely culprit is a bad wheel speed sensor.

Abs

I believe that there are no wheel sensors on a 1998 Ranger. It has rear wheel ABS only.

I've learned way too much about RABS lately.

For years my 92 Ranger ABS light has been on, blinking, off, on again. A couple of weeks ago my brake light (red) came on. I was low on fluid. Looking for a leak I discovered the RABS control valve leaking. It's the part that's in the frame rail under the cab on the left side. What a bugger to replace and expensive too. $151 at Kragen with an additional $50 core charge.

I replaced it and got fluid dribbling down my arms. Very little space for my meat hooks to work. Got it done. Bled the brakes and the light is off. I can only assume it works. I don't go around testing these things.:icon_cheers:

If it hadn't leaked fluid I would have left it alone.

The speed sensor is in the differential. It's a magnet that is some small distance from the exciter ring that is on the left side of the differential interior. It's not likely that the magnet is going bad but certainly there could be a wiring issue.

It's funny though that when the control valve started leaking the ABS light went out. Makes no sense. It's a nice system to have as the rear ends of most trucks will get squirrely in a panic stop.
