i have a 2002 with 4 wheel abs, i first noticed the issue when i was driving in the rain a few weeks and i was pulling off the freeway and had to make a sudden stop and instead of stopping like it should with abs the brakes did a series of locking the front rotors up making a crunching sound and unlocking and it did a few times untill i eventually slid a good 30 feet and almost hit the car in front of me. and just out of curiosity i did the same thing a few days later on completely dry pavement same thing happened. the locked up and unlocked and made a terrible crunching sound i could hear and feel in the pedal.
i had my girlfriend in the car the first time and it scared the shit out of me thinking of getting in a accident with her over something so stupid. so i changed the rotors out and put all new pads in this last weekend. i bought ebc green stuff pads and just regular old pep boys rotors. (im very happy with the performance of the pads and rotors the green stuff pads are really worth it) after spendign all that money on new brake equip. it still does it when i slam on my brakes. no matter the driving condition.

so my question is is it a bad abs sensor? any ideas please?

Sounds very much like false ABS activation. Can be caused by a bad sensor or wheel bearing on the front. I would find a shop that has a scanner capable of datalogging and monitoring the wheel speed sensor PIDS. This will show which sensor is dropping off on you causing the false activation.

its just weird because the brake light does not come on through any of this, that why i originally thought to replace the pads and rotors. didnt cross my mind it would be electronical. i thought the truck would pick that up

If one of the sensors drops out temporarily during a stop, the computer just sees it as wheel lockup and won't kick the light on. The system is just trying to do it's job. It usually takes an actual circuit failure like a broken wire inside the sensor to cause your warning light to come on.
