I just swapped out the heads on my 2.9 L 86 ranger. Have it reassembled up to the push rods and rocker arms.

The info section on this swap describes how to do a valve lash and timing adjustment but doesn't specify if theyre necessary.

Wondering if these adjustments have to be done when swapping heads?

If necessary could some1 please describe the valve lash adjustment in more detail. This is my 1st time doing any major engine work

Valve lash is the space/gap between the valve stem and the rocker arm(or cam ) when valve is closed, TDC for that cylinder.

This space was needed on a cold engine with solid lifters because metal expands when heated and unless there was a small gap the valves might not seal when hot, they could be held open.

With hydraulic lifters, i.e. 2.9l engine, valve lash is still there but not really.........
With hydraulic lifters there will be no space/gap between rocker arm and valve stem.
This is because the lifter spring should be slightly compressed when adjusted properly so valve lash is in the spring now, not visable.

On engines with "rocker arm assemblies" there is usually not an adjustment for each valve/rocker arm.
On engines that have hydraulic lifters and individual rocker arms(or set screws) the adjustment was to tighten rocker arm until it was just touching the valve stem, then tighten 1 1/2 turns.
This placed the push rod in the upper 1/2 of the hydraulic lifters spring.

On engines with "rocker arm assembles" you just bolt on the assembly with correct torque then rotate crankshaft 360 deg and retorque, the 360 rotation is to get a true torque value without valve springs.
The valve lash is in the lifter spring.
And any stock head differences would be taken up by the hydraulic lifters.
