I read the tech guides on the swaps, planning on swapping this weekend, or at least gettin to the junkyard for some parts... Only thing I didn't see in the guides was on the engine comp. I have a 86 2.9, will it need to be changed out? For any year tranny I get? Since I don't have the new Trans, not sure what it's gonna be.. Whatever I can find in the best shape...

I don't believe so. Hopefully someone can back me up on that one. As long as it comes from a 2.8/2.9 or 4.0, you should be OK. 4.0 might get tricky with wiring though, I'm not 100% sure about wiring or whatever on a 4.0 trans.

I hope you can find an M5OD. The others aren't really worth it from what I understand. None the less though, If somethings in good shape It's worth it in my book! That would be my plan too.

Do you have your automatic out? Perhaps you could make a cardboard template cutout or traceout the bell housing pattern and take it with you. Take a piece of card board, Punch out the bolt holes and see how that works. It's simple and should work. Hell with anyone who looks at you funny for doing it!

What's up jham.... For the past 2 yrs everytime I post something you seem to be one of the reliables who respond.. Even when I was gonna sell and move on. So thank you.

Anyhow, I didn't make it to the junkyard, my twin baby girls decided to come the Friday before. And actually if was still gonna go but my wife told me if I left her in the hospital with twins alone I wouldn't have a truck to put the Trans in, so decided it'd be best for my truck to just wait. Plus my jyard has their 50% sale monthly so ain't gonna hurt to wait...

And yeah I'm hoping for an m5od, but like you said, whatever's in good shape... I don't do any hard wheeling anymore anyways though.
And nope done have the tranny out yet.... But as I understand it any should fit...
The a4ld I have in now was out of a 94 xploder. My oe trans died on me in 2011, well more like slit it's throat and bled out... So put in the 94 and it lasted a total of 6 months. So goin manual for reliability.

Back to the original post though, just want to make sure I don't need an engine comp, I was under the impression the comp would control engine speed and shift points since it's automatic?

1st off, Congrats on the twins!

Since it's an older ranger, you don't. I'm running a manual 88' EEC in my truck right now. My truck is an 87 auto.
