yes. i did this swap to my '86 and i had to use a rear crossmember from my '83 ranger (sits inside the frame vs outside) I don't remember how much shorter it was, it was around 4 inches I think.
With my drive shaft since i have an extended cab it was a 2 peice and pretty skinny, the place that does drive shafts wouldn't lengthen it because it would be to long and small and it could bend. So i used one from a '78 f150 4x4 put the right ends on the u joints and had it shortened.
