A4LD swap??

hi guys, I have a wrecked 94 ranger 2wd with a good 4L engine and rebuilt A4LD tranny and I want to know what is the newest 4wd ranger/explorer I could swap these into, I know '95s have a differant tranny but is the swap still possible or am I limited to '94 or earlier? tia

The A4LD was replaced by the 4R55E in 95. It's an OBD II tranny. The only part of the A4LD that is computer run is the lock up on the torque converter. To swap it in would require a lot of software mapping or mods. Not worth the effort. Sell off the parts if you are getting a 95 or newer.

On the other hand, your 94 A4LD represents the end and strongest/best state of evolution of the series, with upgraded internals relative to its predecessors.

Owners of fords with late 80s/early 90s 4.0s (or possibly 2.9s) with blown A4lds are looking for YOUR transmission as a swap-in, if you decide not to build your own.

If you take ALL the wiring from the donor truck you could probably get yourself into a 4R44E.

You would need the some of the exhaust too, some way to install a downstream oxygen sensor.

I went with what I hope is the simplest route, bought another 94 ranger w/4L and A4LD, supposed to be 4x4 but not working right now, maybe electrical because nothing happens when the dash buttons are pressed. Not real concerned about it for now, it runs and drives, has a nice set of Toyo tires under it, everything else works, some rust but the parts truck has everything needed to clean it up, can drive it as is for now, got a winter project lined up I guess.

the Torque converter lock-up is NOT the only part of an 1988-94 A4LD that
is computer controlled... the 3-4 shift solenoid is also controlled by the computer.
