OK . .new to this site but not how to use Forums. I have searched and read the A4LD problem thread and several others. So MUCH information and sometimes confusing/conflicting data out there. I need a NO BS answer on what I should do for simple upgrades with OUT tearing the transmission apart to bands, clutches, bearings, etc.
Here is what the project is: 89 Ford Ranger 4x4 with the 2.9L and A4LD. Sits on 3" body lift and the factory STX package with 32's. I have pulled the blown transmission already. Upon dropping the pan LOTS of gray sludge and burnt smell. Also a large plastic piece . . looks like gasket or seal maybe. So . .I searched and scored a 86 Bronco II A4LD with 70,000 miles, "worked when pulled" for $100. Cheap and crossing my fingers it works. Before I install in I WILL be doing the following:
Secondary cooler installed
New Pan gasket n filter
New Vac Modulator
New fluid obviously
Reroute the vent breather to the upper fire wall vs the metal drink tube
I KNOW this transmission needs a shift kit . . but which one? I hear Transgo a LOT but they have three different shift kits. Which is the better to install? Have a part number? Any other mods that would be beneficial with out tearing the entire trans down?
Truck will be mostly for trail and a daily driver back up. Any help pointing me in the right direction I do greatly appreciate.
