A4LD Governor and Weights

Be careful when pulling the modulator it has a small pin that needs to be there to push the throttle valve in. Get an adjustable modulator you want it to shift into third around 35mph at medium throttle pressure.

We swapped out the governor in the '94 for a governor from an '89 and used the new 35mm weight. The spring was in the position in your diagram on both governors. I have seen pictures of a 2nd spring that goes where yours was, but it was an aftermarket thing. Anyway, swapping the governor and weight fixed the delayed 1-2 shift when cold, shifts like a dream !By the way, we were 3 hours parked to driving with hand tools (but it was the 2nd time) how long have you got it down to ?

I've got the '94 Ford shop manual here. It says to adjust the bands, loosen the locknut, tighten the bolt to 10 -12 ft lbs, back the bolt off exactly 2 full turns, hold that position and tighten the locknut. They also say to use new locknuts and throw away the old ones, but I just put a dab of silicone behind the locknut before I tightened it. A new filter and clean fluid is absolutely one of the best things you can do for an old transmission (in my experience)

45 minutes by myself! LOL...This was my third go around with it too and I was a little fed up with it by then.

Unfortunately, My gov is sticking again as of earlier this week. The weight has helped and on a cold shift, the highest it goes is to about 2500 or 3000. Its better because of the weight changing the shift point but it still sticks from time to time.

For now, I'll live with it because honestly, it's nothing like it was. The new fluid has helped a ton on it's own. More than likely, I'll end up dropping it back down again and swapping Gov bodies since I did use the 87 Body but I used the 94 valve and spring. Perhaps that body is scored in a way that I cannot tell. It doesn't take much to make these things stick...

For what it's worth, I've gotten by since my last post just fine. I wanted to comment again incase anyone comes across this post.

If it doesn't shift, I can run it in 1st gear and once at 2500 or so, pop it into drive and it'll shift. Most of the time, this unseats the governor so it'll work again. Until recently, I had to do this every cold drive. As of Friday, it's been in drive problem free. No issues.

I chalk it up to very dirty fluid. I don't see any wierd material or anything in it but it's dirty. A fluid change and filter may fix this but honestly, It worries me. How do I know the new fluid won't work because the old has so much clutch material in it that it's the only reason it's shifting? I rely on this ol' truck to get me to work 60 miles a day. For now, It's worth not changing the fluid.

If only I knew when it was changed last. When I got the truck in '09, it was dirty then too. It worked fine so I didn't change it for the very same reason....It could destroy it or be fine.
