No matter what gear I put it into, the engine stops as if I just turned the key off. There was no early warning. I was driving and all of a sudden at a red light it stalled. I threw it into N and re-started it and it stalled again as soon as I put it in gear. Any suggestions? :dunno:

sounds like the torque converter is locked up. but you need to give more info on the truck.

Sorry... 1988 - B2 - 4x4 - 2.9l - a4ld - all stock

locked up converter or bad lock up solonoid. have you checked the codes?

It happened this morning on the way to work so no. Can I check the codes without taking it to a shop or buying a code reader (blikning lights or something)?

Also, what options might I have if that is the problem?

read how to check codes in the tech library. and if is just the solonoid you have to drop the valve body in the trans if it is the converter the trans needs to be removed. the valve body drop is a pain. you need to keep track of where each bolt went due to different lengths.

Most likely the converter clutch solenoid. They are a problem with the early A4LD's. There is a "2nd" design solenoid that doesn't stick closed as easily.

Is this aftermarket solenoid a "shelf item" at most auto parts stores?

Thanks for all the info. I'm going to try to drop it this weekend and see what I can tear up.

Ok guys. I replaced the TCC lockup solenoid and it didn't work. I then replaced the torque converter and the damn thing still stalls when I put it in gear.:pissedoff: Any ideas?:dntknw:

something in the wiring keeping it locked?

Disconnect the TC wiring from the transmission to see if the problem goes away.

Have you ran the self tests and checked for other issues such as a vacuum leak?

Ok, now it sounds like you have a stuck valve. Is your truck 4x4 ??
