a4ld - engine stalls when put in gear

I'll try disconnecting the wiring when I get back in town. Yes it is a 4x4. I'm about to scrap the whole thing and do a 4.0 engine & tranny swap so I don't put any more $$ into this one. How can I fix a stuck valve if it turns out to be the problem?

Was there any crap ( metal or fiber debris ) in the pan or floating in the ATF ??

Surprisingly no. It was really clean for a 20 year old tranny.

okay i have the same problem going on with my ford explorer not a 4x4 though and heres the story my wife took the truck got on the free way and all the sudden did not catch any gear so i went to pick inn pull thinking it was the transmission that went out well turned out to b the gear in the pump was broken so got that replaced then the engine stall everytime i put it in gear now i have two transmission that do the same thing that work only thing is i have not changed out the TC cause the other one sounded like it had bbs in it but i just bought a new one so i hope this works

moral is change out the gear in the pump cuase it could b cracked where it is locking up cause if u have a bad torque converter it will snap the gear in the pump and cause lock up even if u change the TC so when u Change The TC amke sure u take off the bell housing to changing that gear out
