I have a 1990 BII with a shot A4LD. Can I take a A4LD out of a 4.0L windstar, ranger, or explorer and stick it straight into my BII (besides changing the tail)?

Thanks.

if you get a awd aerostar 4wd ranger. otherwise you will need to change the output shaft also.where are you located a member near me had one out of an explorer f/s

I'm in the southwest Las Vegas,NV and Victorville, CA. I wouldn't mind driving a day to get a good trans. The local junkyard is having a half off day (117 reg, now only $60), but I would really hate to spend a day getting filthy to just replace one shot trans with another. I've had transmissions rebuilt before but they never seem to last long ~20-40k, so I don't want to waste $1500. To me the factory build always last longer even if it has 150K on it. The BII is not my daily driver. If anyone in the area has something they know is good at a reasonable price, let me know. Thanks.

Convert to manual....I"ve killed four A4LDs....and I wasn't flogging them like I do my trail truck. ALmost done with my conversion.

areostar has the a4ld. Windstar has the axod similar to a taurus. Those transaxles have been a headache to me.

I had an 88 BII with a 5spd before (lent it to someone who wrecked it), and have to say I like the auto better. The auto isn't as reliable, but much more enjoyable to drive, and seems to handle trails a lot better.

There is a break in 88. 85 to 88 and then 88 to 95. You need to stay within the 88 to 95 years and you'll be ok.

Thanks for the replies. One more question though. If I take a transmission out of a 4.0l will the shift points be different?

Actually except for SOME 1995 (first year) Windstars most have
an AX4N or Ax4S transaxles, as the AXOD was phased out at the end of 1995.

Actually it's '85-87 (single solenoid) '88-94 (dual solenoid)
and after that the A4LD was Aerostar only for 1995 and
part of 1996.

slightly different, the 4.0 transmission will upshift at a lower rmp.
And you DO NOT want to put a 4.0 torque converter onto a 2.9, you really will not like it....
